Today through Sunday (5/1–5/3): Small Surf; Cleanest Sunday
Low pressure develops off the coast along an old frontal boundary through Saturday, before lifting NE Sunday. This generates a small amount of mixed windswell mixing with underlying mid-period ESE swell. Overall, look for mostly knee occ. thigh high surf through the weekend..
Moderate N/NE becoming E winds today produce semi-bumpy conditions under a cloud-filled sky. Expect N winds to surge during the day Saturday, leading to cooler conditions (Highs near 65°F) and semi-clean to sideshore textured conditions. Cleaner surf for Sunday as winds trend NW. Be mindful of the morning high tides; the midday tide drop will be the time to break out the longboards.
- 5/1 (Friday): 1.5–2.5′ (Knee to Thigh) mixed swell. High 70°F. Breezy NE becoming E winds, diminishing late day. Quality: 🟡.
- 5/2: 1.5–2.5’ (Knee to Thigh) mix. High 65°F. Rainy & Overcast. Surge in N winds. Quality: 🟡.
- 5/3 (Sunday): 1.5–2.5′ cleaner lines. High 68°F. NW winds.. Quality: 🟡 / 🟢.
Looking Ahead: Minor Early Week; Midweek S Windswell
Weak high pressure moves off the Outer Banks on Monday and strengthens well offshore through midweek. This keeps mostly minor knee-high (1-2′) ranged surf early in the week. Quality is marked lower for Monday/Tuesday with minor surf expected and S Winds adding texture in the PMs.
By Wednesday, we see slightly stronger S windswell. Expect SW/S winds to return along with warming weather (Highs back into the 80s). Best conditions will likely be in the mornings. A similar 1.5–2.5′ mix is expected for Thursday, along with potentially shifty winds around the next front. The surf drops Friday as the front moves through, but confidence is low this far out.
- 5/4 (Monday): Knee high ranged minor surf. High 72°F. Redeveloping SSW winds. Quality: 🟡 / 🔴.
- 5/5: 1-2′ shin-knee high S/SE mix. High 76°F. Favorable morning winds, S winds for the PM. Quality: 🟡 / 🔴
- 5/6: 1–2′+ building S windswell. High 80°F. Best in AM. Quality: 🟡.
- 5/7: 1.5–2.5′ S windswell/SE mix. High 78°F. Shifty winds around front. Quality: 🟡.
- 5/8 (Friday): 1–2′ surf. Winds may trend N behind front. Quality: 🟡.
Final Thoughts
Overall small surf expected. Late morning/early afternoon tide drop will be the best time to target this weekend. Cleaner surf is expected Sunday. Minor surf continues early next week with only a little more S/SE mix into mid next week.
