Tomo’s Brand New Hydroshort from Firewire Surfboards Available at Sweetwater!

BRAND NEW
From Tomo Surfboards
Word has been rumbling through Huntington Beach about the session captured in the below video since June when Timmy Reyes missioned to a fickle right hander to test the Hydroshort in LFT before the final decision was made by Tomo to release this new shape in Helium.

When Timmy got back, he kept the footage on lockdown, but began sharing stories over drinks with friends about the sessions, and the shape he rode, claiming it was the best shape he had ever ridden.
The Helium Hydroshort by Daniel ‘Tomo’ Thomson.
Since then, HB has been abuzz with intrigue over this new evolution of the Hydronaut directed at what Tomo calls “The three to five foot range and up to six feet”.

Why did Tomo decide to release the brand new Hydroshort in Helium instead of LFT?

A continuation of the Hydronaut – the Helium Hydroshort.
The Hydroshort is a continuation of the Hydronaut – a board designed for powerful waves, tube riding and such… So the Hydroshort was a natural progression to be a more all around design both for smaller waves and everyday kind of conditions.

Clearly the shape looks insane in the very un-everyday waves Timmy surfs above, proving the shape unexpectedly diverse, and that’s where Helium comes in; as Tomo continues:

Helium generates a lot of speed. The tech will load you up and spring you through a turn, so you feel a lot of acceleration through a turn.

Now on surf shop racks worldwide – the Helium Hydroshort shot by Slimes Board Store in Newcastle, Aus.
These kind of on-rail sensations that Tomo mentions are what create speed generation in weak waves, meaning Helium especially impacts the sort of waves Tomo initially set out to see the Hydroshort perform well in.
LFT in contrast is most effective at controlling the speed a powerful wave gives you, which may be why Timmy was able to test the Hydroshorts limits in the above clip, and it further explains why Tomo chose LFT for his popular Hydronaut model (seen in the clip below) – it’s purely built for shooting through tubes from Fiji to Mexico and more; even California.
A precursor to the Helium Hydroshort, the LFT Hydronaut is still our favorite step-up in waves 5 to 10 foot plus. Both boards share the same Torpedo Nose design for maneuverability and reduced swing weight.
The Hydroshort is now at surf shops worldwide alongside the Hydronaut.
