CAROL DIANE MCINTYRE SKIBA
On Sunday, June 10, Carol Diane McIntyre Skiba, lovingly known as Diane, passed away surrounded by her devoted and loving family. Diane was a beautiful soul who loved her family fiercely and unconditionally. By her side at death she is survived by her caring and devoted husband Jim Skiba, her daughters Kristin Skiba, Lindsay Philips (Christian, Tessa Grace, Hudson), and son Matthew Skiba (J’vanete, Ava, Vivian). She is also survived by her sister Katheryn Harlan (Steve, Elizabeth, Dane, LeaKatheryn, Alberto, Katy, Greyson), her brother Jeffrey McIntyre, and her sister-in-law Catherine Houghkerk (Cliff, Daniel, Vicky, Tracie).
She was a lover of animals and leaves behind her beloved horse Pepper, her dogs Jax and Moonpie, and her cat Stila. Diane was born to William Butler and June Renfroe McIntyre on July 21, 1956. She was raised in Nash County, NC on a tobacco farm with her brother and sister. She later graduated from Peace College and then moved to Wilmington, NC. Diane and her husband Jim owned and operated Sweetwater Surf Shop in Wrightsville Beach, NC from 1976-1996. She became an integral part of the Wrightsville Beach community. With her great taste and attention to patrons, she helped grow Sweetwater into one of the most successful surf shops in the southeast.
Upon retiring she and her husband traveled extensively. She also began pouring herself into riding horses which was her passion. In 2012, she combined this passion and her business expertise by opening SweetPepper Horsesports, a cowgirl boutique. She opened this with her daughter Kristin and was able to serve her equestrian community for five years. Diane was involved with the equestrian community in New Hanover County and served on the board for Coastal Therapeutic Riding a non-profit that offers therapeutic equine services to individuals with disabilities. She was an active member of Little Chapel on the Boardwalk and enjoyed beach service with her family.
She was deeply loved by her many friends throughout the Wilmington area. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, June 14, 2018, at the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk Presbyterian Church in Wrightsville Beach. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Diane’s memory may be made to Hope From Helen, PO Box 187, Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480.
