Weekend (6/19–6/21): Above Average S Swell Fri; Fading For Weekend With AM Windows

A cold front will approach the area on Friday and push offshore through early Saturday morning. In addition, the remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur will move through the area this morning and offshore later today. This will generate above average S windswell for the area, with 2-3’ surf on Friday, along with waist plus sets with the windswell peaks this afternoon (up to stomach-chest high for standout breaks). Strong sideshore winds this morning will trend more offshore this afternoon with improving conditions. It is worth keeping an eye on things today as a result. We do have a lunchtime (~12pm) high tide so look for the best conditions after that eases a bit during the mid to late afternoon. Note that a few showers/thunderstorms will move through this morning which may impact winds and conditions at times.

S swell drops a bit Saturday but still should yield knee-thigh high surf under somewhat anomalous N to NE breezes around 5-12mph. That leaves semi-clean conditions for the first part of the day before the winds trend light onshore for the afternoon. Overall the best combo of tide (low), winds and surf size will be in the morning on Saturday. Up to waist high sets are possible for standout spots early, but fading through the day.

The front from the early weekend returns north by Sunday morning, along with a return to light SW winds early trending S and increasing for the afternoon. Overall, expect surf in the shin-knee-thigh high zone on Sunday with the best conditions in the morning before S winds get on it for the afternoon.

6/19 (Friday): 2–3′ with plus afternoon sets (Knee-waist high with stomach to slightly bigger peaks in the afternoon). S windswell peaks. Marginal early morning sideshore winds trend more offshore (W) and diminish this afternoon, along with improving conditions. Best after the midday high tide drains out. Quality: 🟡 / 🟢.
6/20 (Saturday): 1.5–2.5′ (Knee-to-thigh high, occasionally larger sets early at standouts). Swell is fading. Light N to NE breezes (5-12 mph) offer fair, semi-clean surface shapes through the morning before light onshore flow develops later. Best combo of size and low tide is early. Quality: 🟢.
6/21 (Sunday): 1–2′ (Shin-to-knee-to-thigh high). Front lifts back north. Cleanest right at sunrise with light SW flow, shifting South and cranking up to chop up the afternoon session. Quality: 🟢 / 🟡.

Looking Ahead: Standard Small Summertime Surf

A summer-like pattern is expected for most of next week. Offshore high pressure will interact with a weak front that approaches through the middle of the week to produce mostly 1-2’ S/SE swell most of the week. Top spots do slightly better on sets.

Per normal, the best winds and conditions will likely be in the mornings before S/SSW winds negatively impact conditions in the afternoon and evening hours. A bit more variability is possible in the winds on Wed/Thu as the aforementioned front nears the area, and potentially leads to lighter and more variable winds at times.

6/22-6/23 (Monday and Tuesday): 1.5–2.5′ (Knee-to-thigh high). Typical summer lines. Cleanest early before SW winds increase and texture the surface for the afternoon. Quality: 🟢 / 🟡.
6/24 (Wednesday): 1.5–2.5′ (Knee-to-thigh high). Front nears the region, creating highly favorable, lighter, and more variable morning wind windows that clean up the surf before afternoon sea breezes add bump. Quality: 🟢 / 🟡.
6/25 (Thursday): 1.5–2.5′ (Knee-high lines). Frontal proximity keeps winds lighter and direction slightly variable before PM sea breezes. Quality: 🟢.
6/26 (Friday): 1–2′ (Ankle-to-knee high). Minimal S/SE lines to close out the workweek. Beat the afternoon sea breeze. Quality: 🟢 / 🟡.

Tropical Update

The remnants of former Tropical Storm Arthur will move offshore the Carolinas later today. This helps enhance our local S windswell today. Otherwise, the tropics are quiet at this time.
